About Me

Writer, editor, and
perpetual outsider. ☆

I went from wondering if getting my Ph.D. had been the worst mistake of my life to using it to build a six-figure writing business. Here's how.

Hi, I'm Rachel.

I'm a writer, editor, creative strategist, Substack creator, and the founder of Rachel Moss Writes. I hold a Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University, a bachelor's from the University of Chicago, and I've spent over a decade teaching, editing, and helping people find their voice on the page.

I've ghostwritten manuscripts, coached dozens of writers, edited everything from literary fiction to fantasy epics, and built my Substack newsletter — Internet Bedroom — to thousands of readers. I used Substack to self-publish my essay collection The Internet Is Our Bedroom, and I'm currently at work on my next two books: In The Girls' Room and the revised and expanded edition of The Internet Is Our Bedroom.

My clients are innovators. Outside-the-box thinkers. People driven by passion and vision. And I help them turn all of that into writing that actually lands.

The long way around.

My path wasn't conventional. But neither are the clients I work with.

University of Chicago → Ohio State

English major, then eight years earning a Ph.D.

I trained as an editor at an academic journal, traveled the world to present research, published in scholarly collections, and taught dozens of courses across four universities. I never quite fit in the academic world — but I made every second count.

The Pandemic

Everything I'd worked for evaporated overnight.

Tenure-track job searches were called off. I adjuncted for $800/month. No matter how good my teaching was, the system didn't care. Something had to change.

2022

Got serious about freelancing.

I tapped into my network, opened a ghostwriting profile, and started meeting incredible clients from all over the world. Within months, I was making more than I ever had teaching. But I also got serious about resting and recovering from burnout.

2023

Went full time as a writer & editor.

I started ghostwriting full manuscripts, opened 1:1 coaching slots, and discovered my hidden talents: the ability to deeply listen and my perpetual outsider-ness. I could channel my clients' voices onto the page in a way that felt unmistakably them.

2024

Things started compounding. Fast.

I grew my Substack newsletter, Internet Bedroom, to thousands of readers. I published my first academic book and hit the Amazon new releases chart. I used Substack to self-publish my essay collection The Internet Is Our Bedroom. I helped a client go from concept to self-published debut. And I crossed six figures in my business.

Now

Building the business I actually wanted.

Every day I wake up and do what I love — I write, I help other people write, and I watch incredible creative work get put into the world. I'm currently working on my next two books, In The Girls' Room and the revised and expanded The Internet Is Our Bedroom, while continuing to grow Rachel Moss Writes. The path wasn't conventional, but it was mine.

What I do today.

How I work.

☆ AI Free

Every word I write and every edit I make is 100% human. No shortcuts, no AI-generated content. Your voice deserves real craft and attention.

🤝 Deeply Collaborative

I go deep the very first time we meet. I listen carefully, ask the right questions, and make sure every piece of work I deliver sounds unmistakably like you.

🔥 Craft Focused

I bring a Ph.D.-level understanding of language, narrative, and structure to every project. This isn't content — it's craft.

💚 Woman Owned

Rachel Moss Writes is an independent, woman-owned business built from scratch on word-of-mouth, talent, and a whole lot of determination.

A few things about me outside of work.

🛏️

Welcome to Internet Bedroom.

Before Rachel Moss Writes, there was Internet Bedroom — my Substack newsletter exploring girlhood, internet culture, and identity. It's where I write about the things I can't stop thinking about: what it means to be a girl who lives on the internet, bedroom culture, nostalgia, and the spaces where our online and offline selves blur together.

Internet Bedroom has grown to thousands of readers and became the launchpad for my self-published essay collections. It's the creative heart of everything I do — the theoretical space where Rachel Moss Writes is the applied practice.
